PLAYERS have teed off in the opening round of the Ballarat and District Golf Association 54-hole open tournament at Ballarat Golf Club this morning.
The three-day event will continue at Creswick tomorrow and Midlands on Sunday.
The Victorian Country Track and Field Championships also start in Ballarat today
The first session starts at Llanberris at 4pm.
Like the golf, entrants are travelling to Ballarat from across the state for the event, which has attracted more than 700 athletes.
TRUST IN A GUST CHASES MORE GOLD
BALLARAT galloper Trust In A Gust will take his earnings past $400,000 if he wins the Macleod VOBIS Gold Star, 1500m at Moonee Valley today.
The Darren Weir-trained three-year-old has won his past four starts and is chasing a third consecutive VOBIS Gold feature event after taking out the $100,000 Gold Eureka in Ballarat and $150,000 Gold Carat at Caulfield.
Tonight’s race is worth $150,000.
Trust In A Gust, which with the top weight of 60kg is giving away 3kg to his nearest rivals, has won five of eight career starts for $310,000 in stakes.
ALL-SWISS AUSTRALIAN OPEN MEN’S FINAL ON CARDS
An all-Swiss men’s singles final at the Australian Open is a possibility after Stanislas Wawrinka defeated Czech Tomas Berdych in a semi-final last night.
Eighth seed Wawrinka won 6-3 6-7 (1-7) 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-4).
His countryman Roger Federer plays world number one Rafael Nadal in the second semi-final tonight.
