Ballarat’s Big V youth championship combination defeated the highly fancied Melbourne University by five points at the Minerdome yesterday.
Star Rush youngster Kasey Burton was named the most valuable player.
The men’s A grade premiership also went to a provincial team.
Warrnambool had the better of Keysborough 50-48. Scores were tied with less than 30 seconds to play.
Keysborough missed the last shot of the game, leaving Warrnambool to celebrate.
Ballarat Basketball administration and events manager Mark Valentine said the 46th edition of the tournament had been successful, with almost 700 players taking part.
Ballarat also enjoyed success with State Bank Blue making it back-to-back titles in the men’s masters section.
State Bank boasts several former Miners players who showed against NEC Warriors still have the “skills and the smarts” to find a way to win.
Ex-Miner Paul Hotchin was judged the MVP.
Ballarat teams dominated men’s B grade, filling three semi-final positions before Bulls held their nerve to win the grand final by a single basket.
Women’s C grade was a similar story, with HPD moving up from social to claim the title.
