The Ballarat shop was one of the last in the country to still open at the weekend, said Department of Human Services general manager Hank Jongen.
“Medicare Saturday trading is currently offered at 26 of more than 380 shopfronts,” Mr Jongen said.
He said the popularity of new ways to claim rebates was behind the decision.
“A growing number of GPs now offer electronic claiming, meaning your rebate gets transferred straight into your bank account from your doctor’s office,” he said.
“Alternatively there’s a suite of Medicare self-service options that allow you to claim over the phone, online or by downloading the Express Plus Medicare app.”
Mr Jongen said staff numbers in Ballarat would not be affected by the change.
