Although still without a permanent coach, the Lions’ playing list is growing and excitement around the newly formed team is building.
Redan will makes its VWFL division two debut against Mordiallic at the City Oval on Sunday, May 4.
Player Josie Smith said appointing a coach was the top priority.
Smith and Redan’s youth girls’ football coach Chris Wilson have been sharing coaching duties.
Smith said while happy to help out, her priority was to focus on playing, while Wilson’s commitments with the youth girls’ team made the task at senior level difficult.
The playing list is steadily increasing.
“We’ve got 18 to 20 players at the moment,” she said.
“It’s encouraging, but we definitely need more.
“It’s a race against time.”
Redan has a mix of ages, ranging from youth graduates at 18 years of age and a mix of experience – some having never played before.
Smith is one of the most experienced, having previously played with the now disbanded North Ballarat Eagles.
She is one of five former Eagles on the Redan list.
Smith said Redan would have preferred to launch its VWFL venture in division 3/4 alongside Ballarat’s other team, Golden Point.
She said as well as making the Lions’ introduction into the competition a little easier, it would also have allowed the Ballarat teams to develop a rivalry, helping to increase the interest in women’s football in the city.
Smith said despite the teething issues, the new-look VWFL was exciting for women’s football.
Redan trains at the Western Oval on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
She said anyone interested in coaching or playing should phone her on 0416 654 776 or Chris Wilson (0408 452 419).
