Four fire crews attended Albins Off-Road Equipment in Wiltshire Lane, Delacombe, to contain the fire in a shot peener machine, used in sandblasting.
Ballarat City Fire Brigade's senior station officer Wayne Elliot said the small fire, which started just after 8am, was brought under control within 30 minutes and extinguished within 60 minutes.
"My investigation concluded the fire was perhaps caused by an overheated bearing in the electrical motors of the machine, a shot peener," Mr Elliot said.
There were no reported injuries.
Factory staff have returned to work.
