Lady Devils coach Rick Romein was pleased with the competitiveness of his squad, but lamented its lack of polish.
“We just didn’t finish off and our decision-making let us down in the first half,” he said.
“(However) our girls stopped a top team from making too
many quality shots on goal.
“We also succeeded in keeping Caulfield in the defensive third – the squad learnt from today and we’ll be ready to take whatever Melbourne Uni throws at us next week.”
Romein said his sides attacking standard improved considerably when the initial 4-4-2 formation was adapted to 3-4-3 and 3-3-4 setups in the second half.
In other results, the development squad recorded a 2-2 draw against Caulfield after scoring in the 33rd and 63rd minutes.
The squad held the lead until the 87th minute, when Caulfield scored the equaliser.
Scorers were Eyriel McGookin and Lisie Dodds.
Meanwhile, Kyra Cooney-Cross recorded a hat-trick in the under-16 side’s 5-3 win over Beaumaris.
