Fishcare Central Highlands secretary Allan Prowse said about 50 members were expected to attend the three-day event from August 22 to 24.
“Fishcare is a group of volunteers whose main aim is to educate people how to fish,” Mr Prowse said. “Here in Ballarat we hold classes at schools.
“We hold a two-day clinic. The first day we teach them how to set up rods, how to tie hooks, how to cast, all the occupational health and safety lessons – you know, not to go and stand on the edge of a boat – and we teach them about the environment. Then we take them out fishing for a day.”
The fishcare conference will include a tour of the Ballarat Fish Hatchery as well as presentations by Ballarat fisheries compliance officers and a taxidermist.
The annual conference is restricted to fishcare members only, however Fishcare Central Highlands does offer community lessons about how to fish for the elderly and disabled.
