The 1.1 magnitude earth tremor occurred about 7km south-east of Maldon at 11.11am.
Seismology Research Centre seismologist Elodie Borleis said it was odd that the tremor was felt by humans.
Ms Borleis said small earthquakes in the area were common, with nearby Bradford Hills a hotspot.
"This morning's earthquake was at a depth of about 7km and generally would not be felt," she said with a laugh.
''We were very shocked when we heard someone had called in to say they felt it... and we had to say 'um, yes there was an earthquake there'.''
She said earthquakes were generally felt when they reached about 2.5 on the Richter scale.
