Its Drummond Street North replacement will include a new general/surgical ward, space for future operating theatre expansion and a front-of-house reception area.

The current hospital entrance will also temporarily relocate to Sturt Street when demolition begins on Monday, September 8, until building works by contractor H. Troon finish in 2016.

The information desk will relocate to just inside the Sturt Street entry, with maps and volunteers available to help patients and visitors.

The inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, BHS pharmacy, dialysis, diagnostic and consulting suite, education resource centre and radiology will all be accessed via Sturt Street.

Emergency department access will remain in Mair Street.

BHS chief executive officer Andrew Rowe said there would be some inconvenience moving around the hospital.

“We have done a significant amount of work to ensure that inconvenience to patients and visitors is minimised,” Mr Rowe said.

“However, we ask that the community is understanding while we build a better hospital for everyone.”
