OPPOSITION Leader Daniel Andrews surprised punters at one of Ballarat's most popular bars on Tuesday by turning up to watch the Melbourne Cup.

He enjoyed one or two Jim Beam and Colas at JD's Sports Bar on Lydiard Street before the race and shouted some to the surrounding racing fans.
"It's always good to be in Ballarat, and if you can have a drink while you're here that's even better," he said.
Mr Andrews was well informed of the bar's traditions, promising a visit to the Gravy Spot.
"I am determined to make a campaign appearance at the Gravy Spot, before the 29th of November," he said.
While the Labor faithful excitedly turned up to meet their leader, there were some at the bar focusing more on the racing on the screens.
"I thought something was going on when the security came in, not sure what, though," said one punter sitting across the bar from Mr Andrews.
"Pretty surprising to see him in here."
