As of April, all Ballarat Highway Patrol cars will be equipped to conduct roadside drug testing as part of a statewide program to stamp out drug-driving.

Drug-drivers will also be targeted by multiple booze-drug bus operations in Ballarat over the next few months.

The drug-driving crackdown will see 100,000 motorists across the state drug-tested by October.

Over the summer holiday period (November 14 to January 4) no drug-driving offences were recorded in Ballarat.

Booze-drug buses visited Ballarat at least five times over the summer period.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said last week that the terrible danger of drug driving was highlighted in 2014. 

“Three people were killed and four injured in Oakleigh when a man affected by the drug ice ran a red light at high speed and hit a car and a pedestrian,” Mr Hill said.

“This is just one reason why Victoria Police is committed to leading the country by expanding our road side drug testing program to all highway patrol units across the state.”
