Ms Davenport spoke about her extraordinary life and her business at a Commerce Ballarat business breakfast on Tuesday, and then gave advice to some young designers trying to break into the industry.
“I love inspiring people to make a step they’ve never taken before and they didn’t trust anybody enough to take their advice,” she said.
“I love the fact that I’ve been in business for 40 years.”
In that time, the fashion world has become a whole new enterprise. Ms Davenport said internet shopping had made people more targeted in their shopping.
“(Even buying online) things do have to fit you, they do have to suit you,” she said.
“Where the internet serves a massive purpose is research. Like with any topic, you go there to research.”
Ms Davenport said she based her clothing range on just a few rules, with comfort coming first.
All five rules could be met even by the lowliest tracksuit pants.
“(But) make them a good pair. Dress with style. You can dress with tracksuit pants, but do it with style,” she said.
“Everybody wears ugg boots. The first thing I do when I get home at night, is get out the ugg boots. And I’ve been guilty of going to the shops in the ugg boots.”
Ms Davenport had another piece of advice for those starting out in the fashion industry: “The first thing that I made was a T-shirt, because everybody wants T-shirts. You can always start a business with fabulous T-shirts.”
