Mullawallah has been officially dropped as a potential name for Ballarat’s newest suburb.
Residents have received a letter outlining that Winter Valley, Winter Rise and Dorney have been shortlisted as names for suburb in the western growth zone.
None of the selected names have indigenous ties.
Winter Valley and Winter Rise are linked to the Winter Family who were landowners in the Delacombe region during the 1840s. John ‘Jock’ Winter was said to be a pioneer who gave generously to those less fortunate. The name also ties in with the nearby by Winter Creek.
The name Dorney pays homage to the late Shane Dorney, a renowned community advocate who started the SJD Foundation and mortgaged his family home to create the Delacombe Education and Training Centre.
The controversial council decision to drop the name Mullawallah after renowned indigenous elder William Wilson ("King Billy") made headlines across the globe.
