At least since they started taking records.
Temperatures taken at the Ballarat Aerodrome smashed the record for the coldest morning on Sunday with -6.3 degrees registered.
Temperatures started being taken at the site in 1957 with the previous record of -6.0 degrees set in 1982.
Weatherzone meteorologist Rob Sharpe said only four weather stations across the country registered a lower result on Sunday morning.
While Ballarat residents woke on Monday to find a severe frost had covered the city, Mr Sharpe said it wasn’t quite as cold, only reaching a freezing -4 degrees.
For those of you who are looking for some slightly warmer conditions, they are on the way.
“The nights are going to be a fair bit warmer, tonight (Monday night) it will drop down to three degrees,” Mr Sharpe said.
“Wednesday will drop to six degrees.”
Mr Sharpe said an increase in northerly winds would result in the slightly warmer temperatures.
Meanwhile, Ballarat police are pleading with drivers to slow down on the roads following a number of accidents caused by black ice on Monday morning.
The cold and frosty mornings created a dangerous environment for drivers with Ballarat Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Pat Cleary saying it was important drivers heeded the warning and drove to the conditions.
“This time of year we ask that people first of all be aware on the cold frosty mornings that there will be black ice on the roads,” he said.
“Drive carefully and drive according to those conditions and that means driving slowly.
“If you know there is ice on the roads, then slow down.
“Any sudden movements, either braking or steering suddenly can result in traction being lost and losing control of the car.”
Senior Sergeant Cleary said police had had a busy Monday morning attending a number of accidents.
“We have been busy this morning attending black ice related accidents,” he said.
“One car has rolled over on the Western Highway, we have cars out there at the moment.
“Thankfully at this point no one has been seriously injured.
“We are asking for people to be vigilant as we are expecting more of these mornings.”
