Entitled Machinal, the expressionist drama of 1928 is based on the trial and subsequent execution of Ruth Snyder.
Written by Sophie Treadwell, the play is not simply a work of simple journalism but offers a dazzling display of language, characterisation, sounds and silences that provide insight into one woman’s soul.
The play also portrays American life as a giant machine, slowly and subtly mechanising both communication and relationships.
Set to be performed by Federation University’s arts academy graduating class, it will be the first time Machinal is staged in Victoria.
With two casts playing in repertory, Machinal will be staged at the Helen Macpherson Smith Theatre from Saturday, September 12 to Friday, September 18.
