THE beard movement is growing in Ballarat. So much so there is even a Ballarat Beard and Moustache Union.
The city’s first ever beard and moustache competition will see bearded blokes from regional Australia meet at the Hop Temple on Saturday, May 7. Beard connoisseur Jake Warren first started grooming his impressive red beard two years ago. He firmly believes life is better with a beard.
“It’s so much better. It provides insulation in the summer and warmth in the winter,” Mr Warren said.
“The upkeep is less than shaving.”
Brayden Dorney of Barber’s Choice Beard and Moustache Tonic gives his locks a little more care.
“Oil is important because your beard hair produces less oil than your head hair,” Mr Dorney said.
Both men hope the competition will spark Ballarat’s bearded movement. The event, run as part of Heritage Week, harks back to the era when men in the gold field sported impressive bears.
“We don’t know what went wrong between that time and now,” Mr Warren said.
