“We have ruled out excessive speed. As to whether the driver was impaired we will have to wait for toxicology results (of his blood) to be returned,” he said.
He said police had a number of circumstances, including fatigue, to consider whether they played a part in the cause of the accident.
“The car was travelling east from Beaufort when it veered off to the left … and sideswiped a tree,” Detective Sergeant Amos said.
“Unfortunately all the force went to the left side of the car where the little girl was.”
SUNDAY 9am | Victoria Police have confirmed investigators will be speaking with the driver once he is released from hospital.
No charges have been laid.
SATURDAY 4.26pm | A FOUR-year-old child has died following a single car accident at Cardigan on Saturday afternoon.
The girl, who was the only passenger, was taken to Ballarat Base Hospital in a serious condition at 2.35pm, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Victoria Police spokeswoman Creina O’Grady said the car was travelling east on Remembrance Drive when it veered off the road, crashing into a tree near Draffins roads.
The girl’s father, a 24-year-old male from Beaufort was also taken to hospital for observation.
Victoria Police’s major collision unit were expected to arrive on scene at 5pm Saturday evening and will investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
