DISCOVERY Day offered a taste – quite literally, at cookery stalls – of trade possibilities. Federation University’s Major TAFE recruitment event attracted about 600 high school students to the SMB Campus. Many still unsure what career path they might like to take, most keen to try a little of everything.
Ballarat High School’s Lachlan O'Keefe was skilled in changing a car tyre, he has done that in class, but he relished a change to try some bricklaying. Building and construction framework really interests him.
Mount Clear College’s Bree Bishop and her group of friends tried “a little of everything”, including getting their nails done. Bree was unsure what she wants to do after school and enjoyed a chance to try a few options.
Simulation welding is used to help apprentices test new techniques. St Patrick’s College’s Rian Smith rated among top potential welders.
“It’s awesome, something different to try out,” Rian said. “I like engineering but I’m definitely interested in trying different trades.”
