WHAT do you get when you cross the smooth sounds of classic brass instruments with an emcee?
Bullhorn. A self-described dynamic nu-wave brass band that takes on anything from Radio Head to fusion hip-hop music.
The band, consisting of seven horn players, one drummer and one emcee will land in Ballarat for the first time to play at Suttons House of Music.
Steve Buchanan studied jazz and trumpet at university in 2003. Bullhorn was formed in 2011 as a purely instrumental outfit – however their sound changed when they recruited an emcee.
“It’s a great change for us – to really have a presence on stage,” Mr Buchanan said.
When the band formed the idea was to take that old brass band sound and give it an edge.
“We really get such a wide spectrum of audience because it appeals to so many ages,” Mr Buchanan said.
“We have the younger crew, but then the brass sound draws in the older crowd. The music has a level of complexity but it is still accessible.
“Bringing an emcee on board brought a lot of focus- because crowds like being told what to do.’
Bullhorn released its debut self titled album in February 2012, only six months after the band formed.
The album covered hip hop, soul, funk, reggae and dance music and features original compositions and re imaginings of tracks by Bonobo, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Easy Star All Stars and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.
Their next album was released at the end of 2014 and since then Bullhorn has focused on touring and experimenting with different sounds.
After this tour, they will jump back in the studio.
The band has also been focusing on live sessions – where they play live online to fans and connect through social media.
Mr Buchanan said fans could expect the latest album to more heavily feature the emcee. Now that the members have been together for a while it will also be a more holistic sound with a modern hip hop edge.
Bullhorn perform at Suttons House of Music on July 2 at 8pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
They will be supported by Sam Boon Trio.
