Ballarat Hatchery, the oldest fish breeding establishment on mainland Australia, released six thousand trout into the lake as part of its annual gift to the council and city of Ballarat.
Russell Fisher has been a volunteer at the Ballarat Hatchery for eight years and said it’s “only fair” they give back to the council and people of Ballarat.
“The council gave us the land to hold the Hatchery in 1870 and since then we have been giving back to them and Ballarat each year,” Mr Fisher said.
“Six thousand trout holds a value between ten and twelve thousand dollars, so it’s quite a significant gift for the community.”
