It’s almost like I'm putting carrots out there, traces of intrigue...that preparedness to walk into a room where you don’t know what’s in the room or what is going to happen in the room.

Well-known local filmmaker Erin McCuskey has been working on her transmedia project Luxville for more than a year now. It’s an arts and performance concept featuring a mythical town called Luxville, which looks and sounds an awful lot like Ballarat.
The narrative project has unfolded with film, a website, photography and live events and performances.
Now MsCuskey is releasing the next stage of the project with City Bloody Hall. It’s to be held September 1 at a secret location within Ballarat’s CBD, with scant other details released other than the event will feature “incendiary talk”, a book launch, and a chance to meet the Luxville “muses”.
But according to McCuskey, the element of surprise and the unknown is what the project is all about.
“I wanted to challenge myself – will people come if it’s just a rumour?” she said.
“I’m hoping that Luxville will incite heart, and that heart is enough to bring people along.
“It’s almost like I’m putting carrots out there, traces of intrigue...that preparedness to walk into a room where you don’t know what’s in the room or what is going to happen in the room.”
City Bloody Hall is centred around a story of Luxville’s Town Hall being targeted by arts activists, who “deface” the building with a huge mural calling on the city to reinvigorate its arts scene.
McCuskey said Luxville was a creative project while also subversively encouraging Ballarat to “be more bold”.
“It’s the next happening for Luxville. It’s being run by the Luxville Arts Avengers, who are an underground guerilla arts group who want to make the city bold once more,” she said.
The event will be held literally in a Ballarat underground location. Invitations will shortly be sent to past participants who have already “registered” as Luxville citizens either at other events or online.
General invitations will be distributed this Thursday, with all welcome to register for the intriguing event.
Luxville’s City Bloody Hall will be held Thursday, September 1, from 6pm to 8pm. It is a free event.
