Thrashing rainbow trout were pitched by the bucket into Lake Wendouree for the opening of trout season on Saturday.
Goulburn Fishing Festival extended to Ballarat for the first time this year with tours of the Ballarat Fish Acclimatisation Society’s trout hatchery and the release of 500 rainbow trout.
“I think is something that will just grow from year to year,” Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford said.
“We have now broken the fish stocking record and we’re very much on track to be stocking 5 million fish each year into Victorian waterways and so there will be a lot more opportunities for people to go fishing right across Victoria.”
The trout released on Saturday were figure in the 27,000 put into the lake every year.
“We continually stock Wendouree throughout the year because it gets a lot of fishing pressure from people living around it which is great, we want people to come and fish,” Fisheries Victoria executive director Travis Dowling said.
“This year we’re doing a record 3 million fish stocking – we’ve never stocked 3 million fish before in Victoria.”
