A Ballarat artists’ re-creation of Michelle Payne’s Melbourne Cup win has taken out the 2016 Swanpool Bald Archy Exhibition people’s choice award.
Nudging out second place by one per cent of the votes, the artwork titled ‘Get Stuffed’ proved a winner among the 4000 visitors through the Swanpool exhibition over 16 days.
While the image of the Ballarat icon wearing heeled riding boots didn’t take out the $10,000 overall Bald Archy Prize, it was a win nonetheless in the mind of its creator – Ballarat artist Anthony Mitchell.
“I was quiet happy for it to be selected as part of the exhibition in the first place,” he said.
Mr Mitchell created the 1200 x 1000 masterpiece over two weekends and aimed to look for a new angle at the inspirational win.
This is the second time Mitchell has entered the competition, and certainly not the last
The Bald Archy Prize has become an icon on the art calendar, calling for irreverent comic and satirical images of well-known Australians.
