There may be no cure to type one diabetes, but that shouldn’t stop anyone from living their life, according to Ballarat diabetic Doug Jenkins.
Diagnosed at age seven Mr Jenkins learnt to live with diabetes, one test at a time.
“You have to live with it. Don’t give up on life just because you have diabetes, see it as an opportunity to do different things and don’t stop doing things you enjoy,” he said.
For those who may be struggling with their recent diagnosis, Mr Jenkins had one message.
“The world is not going to end when you get it,” he said.
“Learn to accept it quickly and live with it… there’s nothing you really can’t do.”
Mr Jenkins was on Friday awarded the Kellion Victory Medal for surviving more than 50 years with the auto-immune condition.
