Merle Hathaway’s passion for the arts and preserving Ballarat’s heritage are at the heart of her decision to stand in the south ward for this year’s local government election.
If elected, Ms Hathaway vowed to improve community engagement, social justice and education in Ballarat.
A staunch supporter of retaining the Civic Hall, the Buninyong resident worked as an education officer at the Art Gallery of Ballarat for a decade.
“Ballarat has never had a councillor with a professional arts background,” Ms Hathaway said. “I would work hard to ensure that ratepayers’ money is not wasted on hair-brained schemes and that the right decisions are made the first time.”
She is also a volunteer for the Soup Bus and vowed to advocate for the homeless and refugees seeking asylum.
