Zumbo’s Just Desserts winner Kate Ferguson is ready to experiment in the kitchen again after she was “desserted out” during the cooking reality show.
The 37-year-old “no nonsense mum” has had to keep a lid on her victory since returning to Ballarat in May.
Since coming home Ms Ferguson has attempted a layered V8 cake but has otherwise had a hiatus from dessert making.
“I did a huge amount of cooks all in a row right at the end so I had 9 or 11 days without a break it all but when I got home I was desserted out where now I’m thinking of getting back into it and starting playing again.
“Everybody who’s coming round is always expecting something so I’ve kind of shot myself in the food.
“I made a V8 layer cake when I got back and realised trying to make a V8 layer cake without a chiller was a pain.”
Ms Ferguson started the show with a dream to operate a dessert truck but sees now she has a lot to learn.
“My original plan was always to have a dessert truck but it’s one of those things where I need a bit more training and a bit more experience before I commit to spending a stack of cash so I’m hoping to get more experience and faff around a bit before.
“I’ve learned a hell of a lot of things in the competition but I've got no idea what it’s like to plate up 500 plates in a night.”
The prize money has given her freedom to pursue something new without a financial impost on her family.
“It gives me the opportunity to actually do something that I enjoy, being able to do I want to try something else and it not have a massive financial impact on my family is amazing.”
The mum-of-two also wanted to demonstrate resilience to her children by keeping a cool head in the finale.
“I’ve never been one to sweat the small stuff, I just think bugger it, if it’s little you’ve just got to brush it off and keep going.
“With the kids I just think it’s really important, where they go to school it’s all about resilience and respect and resilience in particular, there’s so much that’s going to happen in their lives.”
