The mother of a Barwon National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participant has urged affected Ballarat residents to “start asking questions” before its rollout here.

Victorian Advocacy League for Individuals with Disability (VALID) project manager Christine Scott – who has also worked in the disability sector for more than 30 years - urged anyone concerned about their entitlements to attend an NDIS expo on Thursday, November 10.
“If people are concerned about the new changes they need to get prepared and start asking questions before the NDIS is rolled out in January,” Ms Scott said.
“There will be an expo of NDIS services and supports for all ages where people can learn about what is available and I highly recommend that people who may be worried about their entitlements attend.”
An NDIS information session was held at the Brown Hill Community Hall by The Tipping Foundation on Thursday.
Ballarat will be the third Victorian region to have the NDIS rolled out from early next year after Barwon and north-eastern Melbourne.
The Tipping Foundation chief executive officer Graeme Kelly said the NDIS was Australia’s biggest social reform of our generation.
“It taps into the very Australian notion of a ‘fair go’ for everyone,” Mr Kelly said.
“We have seen some really positive results for our clients that are already a part of the scheme.
“This session in Ballarat was a terrific opportunity to share our knowledge and experience with our families and clients.”
The Tipping Foundation’s Ballarat region service manager Cathryn Ryan said the NDIS holds many opportunities for clients, as long as they know how to get the most out of the scheme.
“Independence is everything to our clients, and I’m really excited about working together so that their NDIS plans accurately reflect what is important to each client and their individual goals,” Ms Ryan said.
“At the end of the day, we want our clients out there enjoying and living the lives they want.”
VALID is hosting the Our Choice Expo at the Ballarat Trotting Club to showcase NDIS services and supports.
