Ballarat’s Payne family is celebrating another Melbourne Cup victory.
While Michelle Payne took centre stage a year ago when she won on the Darren Weir-trained Prince of Penzance, this time it was her brother-in-law Kerrin McEvoy who saluted.
McEvoy, who combined with Almandin at Flemington on Tuesday, is married to former jockey Cathy Payne.
With the McEvoys expecting their fourth child, he dedicated a good portion of his post-race interview to Cathy.
“It’s funny, when I spoke to (owner) Lloyd (Williams) the other day he asked ‘when is the baby due’.
“I said don’t worry I’ll be there on Tuesday regardless.
McEvoy said Cathy had been handling the brunt of the workload with their children in Sydney while he had been riding in Melbourne.
“So I’d like to thank you, my lovely wife.”
Michelle Payne, who rode at Flemington but not in the Cup, was among the first to congratulate her brother-in-law after his win.
