A squad of promising Ballarat athletes is preparing to compete on the big stage later this month.
Six youngsters from Ballarat primary schools have been selected in the School Sports Victoria 12/under track and field team following impressive performances at the recent state titles.
Archie Caldow (Miners Rest), Matthew O’Brien (Alfredton), Jake Ashmore (Forest Street), Ben Locke (Ballarat Clarendon College), Madison Wright (Ballarat Clarendon College) and Tiarah Head (Phoenix P-12 Community College) are all named in the Victorian team.
Caldow won gold in the boys 9-10 800m, Ashmore claimed a winning double by taking out the boys 12-13 100m and 800m, while Head was victorious in the girls 9-13 100m multi-class event at the state championships in late October.
In other medal-winning efforts, Caldow also grabbed silver in the 1500m, O’Brien was second in the boys 11-years 100m and third in the 200m, Locke’s best result was runner-up in the boys 11-years discus and Wright clinched silver for her display in the girls 11-years high jump.

Those titles were held at Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium, with the School Sport Australia 12/under Track and Field Championships set to be conducted between November 25-29.
The event is scheduled for Sydney’s Olympic Park.
