A 35-year-old unlicensed driver was caught travelling 70 km/h over the speed limit during a statewide road blitz for Melbourne Cup weekend.
Ballarat Highway Patrol Acting Senior Sergeant Ben Young said a Melton South driver was intercepted by police after the Holden commodore sedan he was driving was detected travelling 170 km/h along Ballan-Geelong Road at 6.10pm on Saturday.
The vehicle was impounded and the driver will be charged on summons to attend court.
It was one of 214 offences detected locally as part of Operation Furlong.
“Police were generally pleased with the behaviour of the majority of road users in the Ballarat area over the weekend,” Acting Senior Sergeant Young said.
“However (police) continue to be disappointed with some individuals and their lack of respect for other road users.”
Fifteen drivers were processed for driving while under the influence of alcohol, illicit drugs or both.
There were also numerous vehicles detected travelling more than 25 km/h over the speed limit.
