A multicultural food event celebrating the many culinary traditions within Ballarat will be held four times a year after a successful debut this week.
Diverse Delicious Nutritious, organised by the Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council, hosted demonstrations of Afghan, Italian, Filipino and South Sudanese cooking on Thursday.
“The reason I started doing these food events is because I really believe food is one of the great communicators between people,” BRMC’s Helen Lloyd-Potter said.
“It not only brings home to you in a really basic way how we’re all the same but also how we’re all different and we’ve got so much to learn from each other and that to me is the basis of harmony within a culture.”
The audience for the first event on Thursday included “a broad sweep” across Ballarat society, Ms Lloyd-Potter said.
“We had people there from every background.
“It was just incredible, everyone was interested, everyone was talking.
“People were sharing tips, they were saying to the cooks ‘that’s so interesting, that nettle grows in my garden (I didn’t realise) I can actually eat it’.
