
Victoria’s regional train lines accounted for an estimated $3.8 million worth of lost revenue in public transport fare evasion for the year ending December, according to Public Transport Victoria.
However, PTV’s official fare compliance for October showed compliance as a whole was rising across the state, with regional lines recording a new high at 95.9 per cent of users using valid myki tickets.
Fare evasion for the report’s ‘western line’, which PTV has confirmed as the Ballarat to Melbourne train line, was estimated at 2.4 per cent – the second lowest of the five regional lines.
The results of May and October fare compliance surveys in 2016 are used to estimate the annual revenue impact of fare evasion.
Revenue losses on the metropolitan network is estimated at $27.0 million, putting the total expected loss at more than $30 million.
