Extra police will be patrolling the city’s streets and major entertainment precinct as police crack down on driving behavior and alcohol fueled violence.
Ballarat Inspector Bruce Thomas said police would continue the Operation Roadwise patrol until January 8 – in a bid to ensure no drug affected or drink drivers were on the roads threatening other motorists during the busy festive season.
Inspector Thomas said multiple extra units would patrol the city’s streets over the weekend to reduce the likelihood of and respond to assaults.
“We just want people to be responsible for their actions,” Inspector Thomas said.
“The message is – be responsible, don’t ruin it for others and don’t ruin it for yourselves.”
Those who flout the laws risk stiff penalties.
If police find someone drunk in a public place that person can be fined $622, while being drunk and disorderly can lead to a $770 fine. Police will monitor CCTV and increase patrols so they can respond.
