The state government has confirmed flexible safety barriers are currently being installed in Ballarat at the Daylesford- Trentham Road, Ballarat Maryborough Road, Bacchus Marsh-Gisborne Road, Myrninong-Trentham Road and Ballarat-Buninyong Road.
Planning is also underway for new flexible safety barriers on the Midland Highway, between Ballarat and Creswick, and the Western Freeway and Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road as part of the Victorian Government's $340 million commitment to 20 of the state's highest risk roads.
Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan said the safety of all drivers remained a priority for the state government.
“That's why we've invested $1.6 million for upgrades in the Ballarat region to address run-off-road crashes,” Mr Donnellan said.
“It's also why we’ve spent every day of the last two years making sure our roads are up to scratch, tackling congestion and doing everything we can to reduce injuries.”
In March a VicRoads spokeswoman confirmed locations for centreline barriers, common infrastructure in Sweden, on the Western Freeway and Midland Highway would shortly be finalised.
“In the interim, we look forward to working with the community to hear their insights on the Midland Highway, between Ballarat and Creswick,” he said.
“This community consultation will help guide us on the improvements we make to this road.”
The exact location of these vital road safety features are yet to be determined. Mr Donnellan would not rule out cutting speed limits on high risk rural roads which he said were considered on a case-by-case basis.
