It can serve other functions, such as a beautiful decoration or table centrepiece, and can double up as dessert at the reception, or slices can even be packaged and sent home with guests as party favours.
Today’s brides are spoiled for choice when it comes to designing their wedding cake.
After deciding what flavours, theme and style you are looking for, it is imperative you discuss with your local professional cake decorator whether your cake dream can in fact become a reality.
Make sure you leave plenty of time, as cake designers recommend at least 12 to 16 weeks prior to your wedding. Professional cake designers may let you taste before you buy, so visit a showroom to be sure. Here are a few tips and tricks to make your cake taste just as good as it looks, and is the topic on everyone’s lips.
On-trend
Currently pink is a popular colour to incorporate into a wedding cake designs, as are florals, a marble or lace look, and gold leaf. Fruit cakes have taken a backseat to mud cakes, either dark, white or salted caramel. Instagram is a great place to gather ideas.
Think outside the box
If cakes are not your style, don’t feel pressured to stick to tradition. New season trends this year include donut stations rather than wedding cakes, while naked cakes continue to be popular, especially at country or rustic-themed weddings. Individual servings of sweet treats are also helpful if you have guests with dietary restrictions and can alter a few of the serving so they don’t feel left out.
Timing is everything
If you’re a traditional bride, then don’t let the timing of the cutting of the cake fall by the wayside. The cake is traditionally cut at the reception between the speeches and the bridal dance. The cake should be cut together by the couple and always the bottom tier, to avoid collapses. The cutting is a natural segue after which people who want to leave may do so.
Know your size
There is always heated debate over how much cake is needed to serve your guests. Before deciding on the size of your cake you need to choose a cake slice size. Traditionally, more high-end venues serve very thin slices whereas more casual venues serve them a bit thicker. The size of your cake slice is up to you and what you would like to treat your guests to. You also need to decide whether you want to offer seconds.}
