The 14-year-old athlete ran with the lead pack for the first half of the race, made a break away with a small group in the last kilometer and then sprinted to the line to win by 15m. It wasn’t his time of 9 minutes 15 seconds that impressed his coach Nev Down, it was the way he ran the race.
“As he always does, Harry ran a clever race by sitting in the pack in the early stages, running relaxed and conservatively. He kicked away at the perfect time to break contact and ran a very fast last 300m,” Down said.
The challenges will keep rolling in for the youngster, with his major focus now shifting towards the National Championships in Hobart on August 12.
Other notable performers from Ballarat were Sam Williams who ran third in the under-19 10km and Julian Spence who was 13th overall.
