Police are investigating an assault of a 9-year-old girl in Ballarat on Monday afternoon.

The girl told police she was waiting to be picked up by a family member on Victoria Street before she was approached by a man who pushed her to the ground about 5.45pm.
A male witness intervened and the offender got back into a black Mazda 3, speeding off.
The girl reported the incident to her mother, who then contacted police.
She was not injured during the incident.
Police want to speak to the man who came to the assistance of the girl.
The offender is perceived to be of Caucasian appearance with ginger hair, blue eyes and was wearing a white Santa Cruz t-shirt, skinny jeans, Santa Cruz socks and green and white runners.
