The Beaufort resident, who has just turned 15, has received awards in the wood chopping competition at the Royal Melbourne Show and has been named the under 18 Champion of Champions Victorian title for 2016/2017.
A member of the Wimmera Axemen’s Association, the year 9 wood chopper claimed the title after competing in eight championships held by various clubs all around Victoria.
In a double dose of success, Mr Carnes also took out awards in the wood chopping competition at this year’s Royal Melbourne Show.
Mr Carnes has competed at the Royal Melbourne Show for the past four years and also open shows around Victoria.
He came first in the 300 millimetre open underhand category and took second place in the novice standing block category.
“There were six competitors in the final, but I had cut through heaps to get to it,” Mr Carnes said.
Mr Carnes said his interest in wood chopping has been inspired by a desire to try new activities as some limitations with his knees do not allow him to play many other sports.
