Since his 2011 win and a string of number one singles and high charting albums, the artist has changed his original pop sound to something heavier.
“I’ve always loved rock music and I’ve always considered myself a rock artist,” he said.
The artist has always been interested in music but when he moved to Australia from the UK in 2005, football took up a lot of his time.
“My parents said if you don’t have a proper job, you’ll end up at Maccas,” he said.
“At the time, a career in music seemed unrealistic, unattainable. It’s going really well and looking back on the past eight years, it’s been a lot of luck and bloody hard work. There’s been so much stuff that’s happened since X Factor. My journey has been really strange.”
While Mastin said it’s been a bit harder since parting ways with Sony, going out on his own has given him the opportunity to be an independent artist.
“I started out with Sony but more now, I find out what I really want to do. And that’s the highlight. I’ve been given the opportunity to do that. I can do whatever I want in the studio. I can play songs the way I want to produce them, the way I heard them in my head,” he said.
He’s been working with the producer of his first album for the new one.
“It sounds better because I love it so much. It’s definitely what I want to be doing. It’s really important to me,” he said.
He said his guitar was never far from him and inspiration for song writing came in different ways.
“It’s a funny thing. Song writing can be the hardest or the best working day. For me the inspiration can be anything. I’m pretty real in my lyrical content. I related things to what has happened to me. Some things get brought up in conversation and they’re like a spark moment, a moment of light.” he said.
The performance at Suttons House of Music on Friday will include most of the new songs from his album due to be released in the next couple of months.
“It’s a shift for me and I’m real proud,” he said.
