It’s believed the man was travelling east along Whitelaw Avenue before he tried to turn onto Sutton Street and struck a gutter, causing his vehicle to rock violently and roll about 7.05am.
He avoided serious injury and managed to free himself as emergency crews arrived on scene.
Police soon discovered the man’s 4WD was unregistered and bearing false plates.
In response, he was taken into custody and conveyed to Ballarat West police station, allegedly returning a positive test for both drugs and alcohol.
The man’s licence was immediately suspended and he was expected to face multiple charges following the incident.
Acting Senior Sergeant Ben Young said it could have been much worse.
“He was extremely lucky to escape the collision with no injuries,” he said.
“It is extremely concerning to police that people continue to drive in this manner placing the community at risk.
“With recent increases in both drug and alcohol testing police hope to remove these drivers from our roadways.”
