2017 will be remembered as the year we got serious about the war on waste.
We need to have confidence in those systems, whether it be recycling, organics processing or what we send to landfill because there is no further use for it.
But we also need to play our part and ensure that what we put in each bin is the correct material.
National Recycling Week highlights how our recyclable materials are resources that can be reprocessed into a range of new products through innovation and modern technology. But it has not always been that way.

It is not that long ago when we all took the time to grow our own vegetables and fruit, created a family meal without opening a package, mended or altered clothing to fit and possessed furniture and electrical goods that could all be fixed.
These were times when our grandparents understood the value of what they had and knew they could not easily be replaced.
Today, we live in a society where things such as clothes are thrown out rather than mended or are out of fashion in a matter of weeks.
It is now trendy to have your own veggie patch rather than buying pre-packaged fruit and veggies.
As our community seeks to reduce our use of plastic bags or wants to learn how to fix things again or simply wants to understand how to use our resources better, Grampians Central West Waste & Resource Recovery Group will be there to help them make a change and make a difference.
During the past two years we have developed a 10-year plan to improve our waste and recycling systems through the develoment of infrastructure, enhancing service delivery and empowering communities to take charge.
We work with local government, business and industry and communities to develop the opportunities to improve recycling and reduce what we send to landfill.
During 2017 National Recycling Week we are very excited to be able to work with the locally produced Junkies Magazine and support the Rethink – ‘What is Rubbish’ Exhibition at Trades Hall from Friday November 17 through to Sunday November 19.
This is a free event and there will also be some talks and workshops over the weekend.
Costa Georgiadis from ABC Gardening Australia will be a special guest on the weekend and will help get everyone as excited to talk recycling as we are.
