A strong contingent of local artists were among those who submitted more than 200 expressions of interest to take part in next year’s event.
Installations, lighting, exhibitions, projections and interactive performances were among the proposed projects which artistic director David Atkins and his creative team will now sift through to come up with the final White Night Ballarat 2018 program.
Local, national and international artists were invited to dream up artistic interpretations relating to two quotes, one from bush poet Henry Lawson and one from artist Vincent Van Gogh.
Artists will be notified later this month if their projects have been successful in finding a home for White Night Ballarat, which will take place around the city from 7pm on March 17 to 2am on March 18.
The official program will be announced in December.
“It’s great to see so much interest from artists, performers and musicians for White Night Ballarat 2018,” said mayor Cr Samantha McIntosh.
“It goes to show how excited people get about White Night, and highlights Ballarat’s strong and successful creative industry which White Night has significantly contributed to.
Ms McIntosh said she looked forward to seeing the new ideas chosen to transform the city for White Night Ballarat 2018.
She also encouraged Ballarat businesses, venues, restaurants and buskers who wanted to participate in White Night Ballarat to register their interest on the event website.
Visit Ballarat chair Sarah Beaumont said the second White Night Ballarat would again put the city in the international spotlight.
“We have a wealth of artistic talent in Ballarat and surrounds, and White Night 2018 will provide the perfect stage for us to showcase that talent to thousands of visitors from near and far,” she said.
“There's no doubt that our city is becoming increasingly known nationwide as a melting pot of arts and culture, and the number of diverse creative expressions we've received for White Night attests to that fact."
On the back of the success of the first ever regional White Night event in Ballarat earlier this year, it was announced that Bendigo and Geelong will also hold White Night events in September and October next year.
