Short was one of the shining lights with the bat for a Cricket Australia XI against England in Adelaide.
The former East Ballarat middle order batsman made 45 runs in the first innings and top scored with 28 in the second as England won by 192.
Short helped Australia get out of trouble in the first innings – joining forces with Simon Milenko, 50, to add 86 after the home side was struggling at 5-57.
He went to the crease at 5-18 in the second innings and found the boundary three times in 55 deliveries to give the CX XI total some respectability.
Short will again line up against England in another four-day game in Townsville on Wednesday.
This will be the English squad’s last match before the opening Test of the Ashes series in Brisbane on Thursday, November 23.

He averaged 43.80 with a top score of 81 against South Australia and 51 against Queensland.
The Bushrangers have made one change to their 12-man squad to meet Tasmania in the third round of the Sheffield Shield season.
Seb Gotch replaces Cameron White, with Victoria till searching for its first win after a loss and a draw against Queensland and South Australia respectively.
East Ballarat’s other export Blake Thomson found some form for Melbourne in Victorian Premier Cricket on Saturday, making 46 – his third 40-plus score in the competition for the season – after struggling with a double failure for Victoria against South Australia in the Futures League.
