CFA investigators were yet to officially determine the cause of the blaze, which broke out about 5am on Saturday along Schwarz Road north of the city.
Ballarat City firefighters arrived first on scene and were joined by Miners Rest, Invermay, Wendouree and Creswick brigades, who managed to bring the fire under control by 5.30am.
Pictures of the scene show huge flames billowing from the single storey weatherboard house before it was reduced to a smouldering wreck as daylight broke.
A Miners Rest firefighter took to Facebook following the incident, saying the occupants had avoided injury.
“Please take a few minutes today to go over your fire plan with your loved ones,” they said.
“If you don't have one, then make time to make a plan and if you do have one then take a couple minutes today to practice it.
“Stay safe everyone.”
A CFA spokesman said on Monday night that investigators had not officially determined what sparked the fire but that it was not being treated as suspicious.
