Workers were on site on Thursday at the scene near Ararat’s Currajong Avenue where a rail line curved north from the train yard towards the Ararat to Maryborough line.
The Maryborough line is been reopened and upgraded as part of the Murray Basin Rail Project, a joint initiative between the state and federal governments.
V/line said in a statement that a ballast train had come off the tracks as it was operating through a siding in the Ararat rail yard at about 9:30am on Wednesday.
“There were no reported injuries and emergency services were not involved,” the statement.
“The ballast train is operated by Qube and was performing work as part of the Murray Basin Rail Project when the incident occurred.
“McConnell Dowell Martinus Rail Joint Venture, engaged by V/Line to deliver the project, is currently working to safely remove the train from the track and complete repairs to the rail and infrastructure.
“The cause of the minor derailment will be examined during a full investigation. Passenger services are not affected.
“Work on the Ararat to Maryborough section of the Murray Basin Rail Project is continuing as planned.”
Last month the rail line saw its first carriages in years to test the new sleepers and gravel ballast.
