Butler from Carisbrook heads up a five-member leadership group.
She will be supported by Georgia Clarke (Ararat Storm), Rene Caris (Horsham Saints), Ella Bibby (Lake Wendouree) and Tara Jasper (Horsham Saints).
GWV Rebels female talent coordinator Krista Woodroffe said the leadership group was selected by player vote.
“They are fitting selections as all five lead by example both on and off the field,” she said.
“Lauren has been a part of the Rebels program for four years now, and after finishing in third place in our best and fairest last year and playing in a senior women’s premiership with Carisbrook, we think the captaincy can help her take the next step, ”Woodroffe said.
The Rebels have named a 35-strong squad, including 20 twenty players from last year, for what is an expanded season.
The competition has been extended from five to nine games, with the Rebels playing Eastern Ranges at Beaconsfield in round one on Saturday.
