The generation of wind power is set to boom in Moorabool Shire in coming years, with one new wind farm already operational and the construction of two others expected to begin in coming months.
Yaloak South Wind Farm at Mount Wallace is now generating electricity, following the construction of 14 wind turbines.
A Yaloak South Wind Farm spokesperson said major construction activities will now conclude.
“The site offices will be dismantled and removed, and the large crane is in the process of being removed from site,” the spokesperson said.
“A number of specialist technicians and other staff will continue to work on site over the coming months as final commissioning and testing works are completed. We would like to thank our project neighbours and the local community for their patience during these works, which have been completed on schedule.”
Construction of wind turbines at Lal Lal Wind Farm will commence in April, with some small civil works beginning next week.
The 60 turbine project will take 18 months to complete.
The farm will be scattered across 2,100 hectares of land at Elaine and Yendon and will generate enough energy to power around 95,000 homes.
The site, which will be able to generate 216 megawatts of power, is expected to be operational by the last quarter of 2019.
Construction of the 107 turbine Moorabool Wind Farm is also expected to begin by the middle of the year, with no firm date for commencement or completion.
Moorabool Shire’s developments in wind power come as Federation University is investigating ways to become involved in training for renewable energy.
“Federation University Australia is interested in becoming involved in renewable energy and is exploring all options,” a FedUni spokesperson said.
Lal Lal Wind Farm community engagement manager Tracey Ward said wind power was the future of energy in Western Victoria.
“There are three local wind farm projects in the Moorabool Shire, one of which is now operational,” she said.
“Western Victoria has some excellent wind resources which will provide clean, green energy for Victorians.”
A Lal Lal Wind Farm community drop in centre is open at the Buninyong Information Centre on Monday, Thursday and Friday morning.
