Ross Weightman, who will again also play with Ballarat in the South East Australian Basketball League, was instrumental in the Miners getting home 88-78 at the Minerdome on Saturday night.
He led scoring with 23 points.
Trent Fisher also contributed 18, while Anthony Kuel finished with 15 in the season opener.
Amos Brooks was a bull on the boards with 14 rebounds, which was complemented with 13 points.
Ballarat Rush came up just three points short against Bendigo, losing 69-66 in the Big V youth women’s championship Watson conference.
The Lady Braves secured an edge with better shooting from three-point range and more visits to the free-throw line.
Laura Taylor and Claire Blower caught the eye, with Taylor getting nine rebounds to go with 15 points, and Blower leading rebounds with 11 and shooting 13 points.
The Miners play away to Werribee on Saturday night, while Rush is home to Kilsyth Cobras.
