THE MASSIVE clean-up task has begun at Ballan's fire-ravaged St Brigid's Church. An electrical blaze is believed to have started the blaze which gutted the 97-year-old church in the early hours of Wednesday morning.Just over 24 hours later, the Inglis St site was a hive of activity yesterday as contractors began to clean up the church's charred remains.A 38m knuckle boom was brought in to help an emergency make-safe team from Melbourne's Johns Lyng Group remove burnt timber from the church's roofline. The church's windows and doors were also boarded up and the site was fenced off.Shortly after the fire, Bishop Peter Connors vowed to rebuild the church, which was insured for $1.8 million.Bishop Connors' assistant Vin Dillon yesterday said he hoped the new church would open in the second half of next year."It will be a minimum of 12 to 15 months before we can come back into the church," Mr Dillon said.Mr Dillon said there was still a possibility the church's existing brick walls - which were relatively unharmed in the fire - could be incorporated into the new church."We are still waiting on the final report from the structural engineer about the walls but from the initial work, we are very optimistic that they will be saved, which is good news," Mr Dillon said. From next Sunday, the church's Sunday services will be moved to the town's Anglican church in Simpson St.The services will be held at St John's Anglican Church on the first, second, third and fifth Sunday of the month at 11am."St John's Anglican Church has been extremely generous in offering us the use of their facilities," Mr Dillon said.In the meantime, St Brigid's Good Friday service will be held in the church precinct at 10am today while an Easter Sunday service will be held at the Ballan Mechanics' Institute at 10.30am.
