The group of 15 students presented a donation to visitors from a Dili health organisation during their visit to the Damascus College on Monday.
The selected Year 11 students will visit Klibur Domin, a centre for disability and tuberculosis support, during their visit to Timor Leste in June.
Klibur Domin chief executive Joaquim Soares spoke to students during his visit to Damascus College on Monday.
“Timor Leste has one of the highest burdens of tuberculosis in South East Asia. For every 100,000, there are around 1000 people affected with tuberculosis,” he said.
“A very important aspect of this program is educating people to understand what is tuberculosis and how to prevent it, then when people have signs and symptoms we encourage them quickly to go to a health facility to get treatment and diagnosis.”
The students will also travel to Damascus College’s sister school Santa Maria in Ainaro to help teach and volunteer.
